POSTED: 01:01 p.m. EDT, Sep 05, 2007

A 33-year-old Ravenna Township man died Monday from injuries suffered when his all-terrain vehicle collided with a dirt bike on a sand dune in a park in western Michigan.

Edward Meadows was driving his ATV on a sand dune in Silver Lake State Park on Saturday when the accident happened.

Witnesses said he turned his ATV into the path of a dirt bike, driven by an Illinois man, Oceana County sheriff’s deputy Phil Sailor said this morning.

Both men were transported to Spectrum Hospital in Grand Rapids, Mich. Both were wearing helmets and investigators do not think alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The park — on the Lake Michigan shore about 35 miles north of Muskegon and featuring tall dunes — is popular with off-road motorists. The state grants daily permits to drive on the sand dunes.

The crash was the second fatal one on the dunes this year, according to a story in Tuesday’s Ludington (Michigan) Daily News.
