Teen injured in ATV collision

The 17-year-old driver of an off-road vehicle was injured Friday evening when he collided head-on with a car on the Canal Road near St. George.

RCMP Sgt. Greg MacAvoy said both vehicles swerved in the opposite direction but could not avoid the collision. The 17-year-old was thrown from the ATV and was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries on Friday at about 7:30 p.m.

The driver of the car was not injured, said MacAvoy. The accident is under investigation.

MacAvoy said the accident speaks to a bigger issue.

“He (ATV-driver) was not supposed to be on the road,” said MacAvoy. “People are operating them on the road and they don’t meet safety standards. They are not designed for the road at those speeds.”
