McCorkle dies in four-wheeler accident

Lester McCorkle was an avid hunter who loved his family.

An afternoon four-wheeler outing last Wednesday afternoon ended in tragedy when Lester McCorkle, 65, of Tyronza drowned after his ATV turned over into a pond.

According to reports from the Poinsett County Sheriff’s office, McCorkle and his grandson were making routine checks of crawfish ponds. After remounting the vehicle after the checks, McCorkle put the vehicle in reverse. While backing up, the four wheeler’s right side tires slid onto the pond’s levee, causing the vehicle to overturn into the water.

McCorkle’s ten-year-old grandson was able to free himself from the vehicle, but McCorkle was pinned underwater. His grandson was unable to remove the four-wheeler because of its large size. He ran for help.
