Alcohol Suspected in Fatal ATV Crash

Officers with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources say alcohol may be a contributing factor in a fatal ATV crash Saturday in Covington. Timothy W. Fannin, 39, was pronounced dead following the crash around 4:00p.m. Conservation officer Darin Streuer said, “Fannin was traveling on a Honda 250 4-wheerler in Covington with a passenger in front of him and did not negotiate a left turn correctly and both the 7 year old passenger and Fannin were thrown from the ATV.”

Officer Streuer suggested that alcohol may be a contributing factor according to witness statements. Test results are pending. According to officer Streuer, Fannin was warned by a Covington officer earlier in the day about riding the ATV in town.

The 7 year old passenger was flown by helicopter to Carle Hospital in Champaign, Illinois and was listed in serious condition.

Both occupants of the ATV were not wearing helmets. According to Indiana State Police Conservation Officers Matt Tholen, helmets are not required to be worn on ATVs, but they are recommended
